Electromagnetism news

Maryland Meeting update

The July Maryland conference is being updated daily at the Thunderbolts web site - speakers and subjects are evolving and more information is forthcoming at www.thunderbolts.info so that those planning to attend can get a broader picture of the event. Good luck to all.

Magnetic Ropes and Solar Storms

George Mason University scientists have discovered that giant magnetic ropes are the cause of solar storms. Jie Zheng and Xin Cheng used images from the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft. It seems they are a long suspected process but could not previously be seen as the ropes moves extremely quickly. Magnetic ropes trigger solar eruptions which send charged plasma into space. When the magnetised cloud reaches earth a huge amount of energy comes into contact with the magnetosphere of the earth.

Earthquakes and Volcanoes

At www.weatheraction.com/displayarticle.asp?a=354&c=5 Piers Corbyn has a new set of dates for EQ or volcanic activity - between the 16th and 19th of June. Meanwhile, at www.irishweatheronline.com/news/earthquakesvolcanos/ash-cloud-spreads-fr... reports on a volcano on the border of Eritrea with Ethiopia with a huge ash cloud - see space image on site. Nabro is located in the Danokil Depression and this is the second volcano to erupt in this region recentlywhich is part of the Rift Valley complex.

Update on solar flare June 7th

Piers Corbyn, at www.weatheraction.com/displayarticle.asp?a=351&c=5 is now saying it's effects were negligible as it was not a face-on event (it was not facing towards the earth) which appears to be a reasonable diagnosis. This, he emphasizes, is ongoing research. Interesting to stay abreast of just how the Sun affects the earth via the solar wind.

Super Solar Flare

It seems solar flares are in the news as Paul La Violette, in the journal Radiocarbon (June 2011, 53:2 page 303-323) claims a super solar flare was responsible for the Pleistocene extinctions - or those that occurred at the onset of the Younger Dryas event. He says that there was an abrupt rise in atmospheric radiocarbon concentrations in the Cariaco Basin varve record (from lake sediments) at 12.837 years BP (the beginning of the Younger Dryas event).

Volcanoes and earthquakes

At www.physorg.com/print226459407.html there is a report on a volcano in Chile that erupted on June 4th. A rift, 6 miles by 3 was torn out of the surface of the earth. The volcano lies 40 miles away from some magnitude 5 earthquakes which may indicate a tectonic origin for the volcano - and the volcano was again active on the 5th and 6th. Piers Corbyn, at www.weatheraction.com/displayarticle.asp?a-350&c=5 has suggested a link with a 10 meV proton burst on the Sun, as well as tornadoes in Massachusetts and Saskatchewan and wild winds in Montreal.

Music by Lightning

This story is at www.physorg.com/news/2011-05-tesla-lady-gaga.html ... and the artificial production of lightning via Tesla coils - on stage. The Open Spark project produces music out of lightning - available on video.

The Plasma Universe

News of an event on The Plasma Universe, 7pm to 8.30 at 27-29 South Lambeth Road, Vauxhall, London SW8 1SZ (for details go to http://bis-space.com/2011/02/17/1338/the-plasma-universe ). Plasma is all around us and the talk will be a journey through space and down to earth, exploring plasma and the numerous applications that can be made of it. Melanie Windridge is a plasma physicist with a PhD from Imperial College where she researched fusion energy.
