Glowing Blob

24 Feb 2017

At ... which begs the question - does Pluto have the ingredients of life? This is a far cry from the situation prior to the New Horizons mission when Pluto was regarded as a distant and cold cosmic object that was dead. Since the flyby last year scientists are now having second thoughts - even though Pluto's atmosphere is thin and sparse.

At ... a vast luminous object has been spotted in the distant universe. It is described as a glowing blob. It is very bright but there is nothing else visible in the vicinity. It is described as an energetic phenomenon without an obvious source of power. Did they really say that you might think - and what will Thunderbolts have to say about anomalous sources of power in the universe. Watch this space - or their space to be more correct.

It is a mammoth proto cluster we are told and astronomers are looking back in time through their telescopes - ten billion years ago. This blob was formed 3 billion years after Big Bang (but they can see it happening right now as it takes light that long to reach the earth).

At ... the discovery of seven earth size exoplanets orbing a star definitely excited the science correspondent of the BBC. The star is just 40 light years away (send in Doctor Who), located in the constellation of Aquarius.

At ... dunes of sand and grains have been seen on Comet Churyumov Gerasimenko by the Rosetta mission. Dune formation requires wind to create them - but where does the wind come from?

PS ... you don't get to hear much about the Age of Aquarius nowadays. The appear to have got the start date wrong (not for a couple of hundred years at the last look). We are still in the Ages of Pisces.
