The Great Migrations

1 Nov 2012

A genetic study claims it has uncovered a period of human population expansion that it dates between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago - see ... and as usual there are lots of speculative explanations on the drawing board - but not neccessarily the right ones. In reality, it is not known why humans decided to migrate on a large scale at this point in time, and assuming the dates are based on calculations associated with rates of genetic change even the dates might be open to revision in the future, but it is a very interesting finding as it indicates something happened to set them in motion - but what? The geneticists intend to research a little deeper by increasing the number of complete Y chromosomes used in the study, which amounts to 36 people. They are quite capable of multiplying this tenfold which may in turn throw up some interesting data on from where and where to for example.
