Heavenly Bursts of Energy

25 Jan 2020

At https://phys.org/news/2020-01-riddle-heavenly.html ... Cosmic lightning is happening all around us we are told. Somewhere in the sky there is a pulse that flashes and extinguishes itself at the next moment. Such heavenly bursts are measured  with radio telescopes and have been one of the mysteries of astrophysics. They are also known as 'fast radio bursts'. It seems the frequency of these bursts actualy disposes of the standard idea they were created in catastrophic events such as novae (or supernovae come to that). However, even after this admission it seems that cosmic lightning is not on the table and various other explanations are proffered.

At https://phys.org/news/2020-01-betelgeuse-dim-diminishes-magnitude.html ... another mystery getting a lot of attention at the moment is the idea that the star Betelgeuse is becoming dimmer - but why. It is a red supergiant star in the Orion constellation and is actually known as a 'semi regular variable star'. It would seem the dimming is not anything new.

At https://phys.org/news/2020-01-insights-brightest-explosions-universe.html ... super luminous supernovae have also been a mystery too it would seem. This is another explanation of what is picked up by space cameras and interpreted by astrophysicists.
