Eye of the Storm

Link provided by Robert courtesy of our old friend from Great Yarmouth, and his blog at 'Everything is Electric' - go to https://thedailyplasma.blog/2018/12/09/eye-of-the-storm-part-1/ ... the eye of the storm being a reference to the red spot on Jupiter. Andrew Hall, the blog author, claims Earth's geology and weather is a result of capacitance in Earth's electric circuit - and has written extensively in electric universe channels. Hall goes on to say, forget everything you read about in geology. It's wrong. Provably wrong.

Thomas Gold

Robert sent in a link to https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/89/13/6045.full.pdf ... with the note, back in the 1990s Thomas Gold wrote about the Deep Hot Biosphere. The link provides a 5 page piece by Gold which begins - 'there are strong indications that microbial life is widespread at depth in the crust of the earth, just as such life has been identified in numerous ocean vents. This kind of life is not dependent on solar energy and photosynthesis. Its energy supply comes from chemical sources due to fluids that migrate upward from deeper levels in the Earth.

Great Barrier Reef

AGW activists and the media like to repeat certain overblown mantras regarding global warming. These include 'poley' bears (living close to the North Pole) starving as a result of declining ice floes - even though polar bears can swim long distances. Last year's heat wave (a magnificent summer in most parts of Britain) was a field day for the alarmists - but somewhat spoiled by the cold November and snow storms that struck large parts of the US and central Europe. Russia tends to get left out of these discussions.

Voyager News

Robert sent in the links https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6479655/Nasas-Voyager-2-... ... and https://astronomynow.com/2018/12/10/voyager-2-leaves-the-suns-influence-... ... and https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-s-voyager-2-probe-enters-interst... .... Voyager 2 is now officially outside the Earth's magnetic bubble and within interstellar space - although it has yet to pass through the Oort Cloud. It was announced at the American Geophysical Union conference on December 9th (2018).

Magnetic Reversals

In the early 20th century geologists became aware that certain rocks exhibited magnetism that was different in orientation from the current magnetic field of the Earth. It was mostly ignored as anything significant at the time mainly because it was not properly understood - or what it might imply. Eventually they acknowledged it was a signficant observation and that meant people tried to find out what it meant. A number of papers in the 1960s shed some light on the process by identifying polarity transitions in lava flows (igneous rocks) and sedimentary layers (sedimentary rocks).

Megalodon Extinction

Megalodons might be something you know about because your children or grandchildren have been on You Tube looking for monster animals - and Megalodon were giants of the shark world. At https://phys.org/print463749152.html ... at 2.6 million years ago there was a huge spike in iron-60 radiation, we are told. A new paper in the journal Astrobiology (December 2018) by a Brazilian team of scientists is proposing an interesting idea.

Magnetic Reconnection

At Tall Bloke's talk shop 'Old Brew' (which sounds like a winter warmer such as Sadler's Peaky Blinder) has a post on magnetic reconnection - see https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2018/12/08/magnetic-reconnection-in-spac... ... magnetic reconnection in space - experiment and satellite sightings. A magnetic field is more of a trajectory than an actual entity in spite of being discussed as if it actually exists. They are found in space just as they are found in bar magnets (see https://brilliant.org/wiki/magnetic-field-lines/ ) ...

Greenland Ice Shearing

At http://sciencenordic.com/greenland-icebergs-may-have-triggered-younger-d... ... courtesy of https://cosmictusk.com/younger_dryas_ice_bergs_greenland_hiawatha_comet/ ... Greenland ice bergs may have triggered the Younger Dryas event is the title of what is a 2013 post. This is a variation on the old theory that Canadian melt water flow into the North Atlantic and caused the cooling period (which lasted a 1000 years, or longer). As such it is a peculiarity as climate blips usually  last a fraction of that time.

Magnetic Fields

Nice bit of writing at https://astrobites.org/2015/02/19/cool-stars-have-magnetic-fields-too/ ... 'consider, for example, the solar dynamo (dynamo is a fancy term for the thing that creates a magnetic field) ....'. Our Sun has complex magnetic fields which give rise to sun spots - but we do not understand the inner workings of the Sun's dynamo .... etc.
