A Sun Constant

At https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/02/11/evidence-for-a-new-fundamental-co... ... research at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne has shown that the Sun's magnetic waves behave differently than currently imagined. Examining ten years of data the team from the Dept of Mathematics, Physics, and Electrical Engineering. have found magnetic waves in the Sun's corona react to sound waves escaping from inside the Sun. The waves were previously thought to originate at the Sun's surface. The researchers found the magnetic waves are excited higher in the atmosphere by sound waves from deep below the surface (but what exactly these might be is not described in the press release). This causes the Sun's corona to shake in a collective fashion - vibrating over a clear range of frequencies. It is being heralded as a new constant of the Sun as it was observed over a ten year period.

The team collected observations of last year's total solar eclipse via telescope and electronic camera in order to better understand what is going on. They could see giant streamers coming out of low solar latitudes as well as plumes at the Sun's north and south poles ...

    ... and they held this shape via the Sun's magnetic field. Motions within the solar corona attained speeds of several hundred miles per second during the eclipse.
