At http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2010/09/long-sought-viking-settlement-to.html Sept 23rd ... further information on the discovery of the Viking settlement of Linn Duchaill, near Annagassan, 70km north of Dublin. The excavations at this site are expected to continue for years if funds allow.

Meanwhile, at www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2010-09/uocd-nma092110.php a report from the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory has a paper on Neanderthal culture by a leading anthropologist. It relies on identifying specific cultures (tool assemblies) and assigning them either to early Modern Humans or to Neanderthals so there is a certain amount of assumption involved but basically he is saying Neanderthals were not clumsy cavemen but used darts and arrows, attributes it is usually thought of the Out of Africa migration. He claims the Neanderthals were a sub-species of Humans and not a different species.
