Brown Dwarf Oddity

At ... the curious case of the over luminous brown dwarf. It is theorised brown dwarfs form secondarily to main sequence stars. A gas cloud collapses, heats up, and ignites. However, brown dwarfs, the theory supposes, do not have enough mass to start forming hydrogen as in a star (and instead they form deuterium). Over time they cool off - and fade away. The brown dwarf in question is 16 times brighter than expected by the model (theory). Hence, astronomers are looking for reasons why.

Rocket Propulsion

At ... propelling spaceships without fuel. Mike McCulloch of Plymouth University first came up with the idea of quantised inertia (QI) in 2007. This involves light being converted into thrust. QI predicts that objects can be pushed by differences in the intensity of Unruh radiation in space. The idea is similar to a ship being pushed towards its bay because there are more waves hitting it from the sea ward side of the boat.

solar constant

At ... the IPCC lowered their estimate of the impact of solar variability on the Earth's climate from the already low value of 0.12 watts per square metre given in the 4th Report to just 0.05 in the 5th Report (2013). There are long term values extended over 261 years (1750-2011) and they apply to 11 year solar cycles (sunspots). The peaks of sunspot/solar cycles vary so what is being measured is the baseline (the minimums of each cycle).

Evidence of people living in western Australia 50,000 years ago has been discovered in the remote Carnavon Ranges. They lived in the region during a long part of the so called Ice Age - see ... and a similar, but longer report can be found at ... where it adds, '.. more than 50,000 years ago). The findings are published in PLOS One, an online journal, and the excavations are taking place in a rock shelter (with some deep diggings into the floor area).

Blue Sun Anomaly

At ... is actually a link to a video by one of my favourite scientists, the much maligned (by CAGW activists) Dr Willie Soon. He is an extremely polite man even in the face of some incredible abuse by people who know as much about climate as they can write on a postage stamp. He doesn't resort to the same level of insults as his critics and always comes across as cool as a cucumber - a one time admirable human characteristic that seems to be part of history nowadays.

Electron Rain

Another video - this time viewable at (September 21st 2018). NASAs latest rocket into space has been a success, deploying the ICESat-2 which is designed to make 3D laser images of earth's surface in order to keep a tally on glaciers etc. However, a pair of tiny satellites were tucked into the rocket and also successfully deployed as well. They were built by students at UCLA's department of Planetary and Space Sciences - which are designed to monitor the ebb and flow of electrons around our planet.

Electric Bacteria

At ... bacteria that produce electricity have been found in mines and on the bottom of lakes. Now they have found it in the human gut. A common diarrhea causing bacterium, listaria monocytogenes, produces electrictiy in a way hundreds of other bacterial species do. Many of these bacterium are part of the human gut microbiome and amny cause the food releated illness, listeriusis - which can also cause miscarraiges. Other bacterium use electricity and can cause infections and gangrene.

British Plate Movements

At ... the British mainland, we are told, was formed by the collisions of three land masses. It has long been thought that most of Scotland was not always part of the British Isles - but now geologists have been investigating the SW of England and have come to the conclusion there was a third piece of the puzzle. This concerns all of Cornwall and a large dollop of Devon.  They say this piece of real estate was once part of France (pointing at similar geology in Brittany) and separate from the rest of England and Wales.

Gravity - Newton and Einstein

At ... astronomers and physicists have revived a previously debunked theory of gravity, arguing that motion within dwarf galaxies would be slower if they were close to a massive galaxy. This is the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (or MOND as it is usually referred to) - which proved to be a controversial alternative to Einstein's General Relativity model. Modern attempts to keep general relativity alive have resorted to claiming dark matter plays a role - even if it cannot be detected.
