Hurricane Florence

At last, after days of media hype hurricane Florence has made landfall in North Carolina (and its wet and windy from the news pictures bounced back across the Atlantic). The danger is flooding as heavy rain is is set to continue over the weekend. This is of course a not unusual weather phenomenon. In the days leading up to land fall there was a lot of focus on the hurricane by scientists - see for example ... where we have a nice image of the hurricane taken from a video camera on the international space station ....

Magnetic Waves

At ... magnetic waves create chaos in star forming clouds. Stella Offner of the University of Texas in Austin has found that magnetic waves are an important factor driving the process of star formation within the enormous clouds that birth stars. The research is published in Nature Astronomy (September 2018).

A Beery Tale

At ... a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science suggests beer brewing existed in the Levant (and Eastern Mediterranean) 500 years prior to its earliest human evidence fron northern China. Indeed, the Natufians lived in the period prior to the Younger Dryas event and so we are talking about a time prior to the establishment of farming (and people living in one place and not moving around). Three stone mortars from a 13,000 year old Natufian burial cave complex have been analysed.

SIS Autumn Speaker Meeting

This will inlcude Bob Johnson's talk, 'Why the Electric Universe isn't the same as the Plasma Universe and Why it Matters' ... which will be a two part presentation (with only one other speaker). There wil be breaks in between the 3 parts. Johnson's talk promises to be exciting as he will say the EU differs from the PU by the inclusion of i) recent planetary near collisions with Earth and another celestial body or bodies, ii) the Saturn theory, and iii) the anode sun model of Juergens, the electric sun.

Origins of Salt

Robert Maximus has a thread on the thunderbolts forum on catastrophist geology and at one point the discussion moves to the origin of rock salt - and Robert quotes from .. large formations of rock salt are found on all the continents. Oil and gas often coincide with salt deposits - in the North Sea basin for example. Salt deposits are often described as 'evaporites' (left behind by a former sea).

The Hexagon

At ... NASAs new mission Focussing Optics X-ray Solar Imager, or FOXSI, is due to take its thrid flight (in September). Maybe it has already. FOXSI is a sounding rocket - meaning to measure. Sounding rockets make brief 15 minute journeys above the Earth's atmosphere to look at space before falling back to ground. These missions are much cheaper than sending satellites into orbit and enable scientists to test ideas - and if those ideas don't achieve very much not a lot is lost.

Aty ... fatty residue on pottery from the Dalmation coast of Croatia has revealed the presence of fermented dairy products - soft cheeses and yoghurt. They datge back 7200 years ago.

Equinox Cracks

At (September 7th 2018) a fascinating claim. Two solar storms are striking the earth this weekend and in the next couple of days, each flowing from a distinct coronal hole in the Sun's atmosphere. Neither is expected to produce strong geometric storms.
