Magnetic Reversals

In the early 20th century geologists became aware that certain rocks exhibited magnetism that was different in orientation from the current magnetic field of the Earth. It was mostly ignored as anything significant at the time mainly because it was not properly understood - or what it might imply. Eventually they acknowledged it was a signficant observation and that meant people tried to find out what it meant. A number of papers in the 1960s shed some light on the process by identifying polarity transitions in lava flows (igneous rocks) and sedimentary layers (sedimentary rocks).

Megalodon Extinction

Megalodons might be something you know about because your children or grandchildren have been on You Tube looking for monster animals - and Megalodon were giants of the shark world. At ... at 2.6 million years ago there was a huge spike in iron-60 radiation, we are told. A new paper in the journal Astrobiology (December 2018) by a Brazilian team of scientists is proposing an interesting idea.

Magnetic Reconnection

At Tall Bloke's talk shop 'Old Brew' (which sounds like a winter warmer such as Sadler's Peaky Blinder) has a post on magnetic reconnection - see ... magnetic reconnection in space - experiment and satellite sightings. A magnetic field is more of a trajectory than an actual entity in spite of being discussed as if it actually exists. They are found in space just as they are found in bar magnets (see ) ...

Greenland Ice Shearing

At ... courtesy of ... Greenland ice bergs may have triggered the Younger Dryas event is the title of what is a 2013 post. This is a variation on the old theory that Canadian melt water flow into the North Atlantic and caused the cooling period (which lasted a 1000 years, or longer). As such it is a peculiarity as climate blips usually  last a fraction of that time.

Magnetic Fields

Nice bit of writing at ... 'consider, for example, the solar dynamo (dynamo is a fancy term for the thing that creates a magnetic field) ....'. Our Sun has complex magnetic fields which give rise to sun spots - but we do not understand the inner workings of the Sun's dynamo .... etc.

Modelling an Extinction

The end of Permian mass extinction event was caused by global warming - see ... fossils in ancient seafloor rocks dispaly a thriving and diverse marine ecosystem - followed by a swathe of corpses in the next screen shot of the event. Firstly, how did a thriving and diverse ecosystem become fossilised. What is the mechanism for this - as we are talking about deep water environments. What divides the thriving rocks from the rocks full of corpses. Have they realistically defined the situation or are they constructing a theory.

Plague and Human Foible

At ... the oldest trace of bubonic plague has been found in a passage grave in Scandinavia - going back 5000 years. The discovery was made via DNA research as archaeologists wondered why so many people died out at around the same point in time (after C14 of the bones). It seems a plague pandemic may have been to blame - or this is the theory that is gaining traction. This is interesting as we have a major narrow growth tree ring event dated at 3150BC (on the Belfast dendrochronology).

Meteor Explosion

It seems the meteor explosion over the Dead Sea has caught up with mainstream - see ... which begins by telling us the South West Trinity team have been excavating at Tall el-Hammam for the last 13 years (and will be back there again in the new year). The civilisation on the Middle Ghor (or Kikkar Plain) had lasted all of 2500 years and was prosperous in the MB era. It had a perimeter wall a 100 feet thick, and 50 feet high - a quite formidable defensive barrier. It had multiple gates, and towers, and all were obliterated in an airburst event.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy

At ... a new study unifies dark matter and dark energy into a single phenomenon, a fluid which they say possesses negative mass. If you were to push a negative mass it would accelerate towards you, we are told. Currently, cosmology does not integrate negative mass into the mainstream model of the universe so this is a distinct departure, it would seem. In addition, the current model of the universe tells us nothing about what dark matter and dark energy are like physically.
