7 new papers

At https://notrickszone.com/2019/09/02/settled-science-7-new-papers-show-re... ... some seven new papers show regional temperatures were between 2 and 6 degrees C warmer than today - 'during the last glacial' i.e. duyring the last Ice Age. So, how cold was the last Ice Age? Forget the projected co2 concentrations highlighted by the blog author (he is a climate change sceptic) as these are discerned from ice cores (which are assumed to be small snatches of ancient climate, in miniscule proportions).

The Reef

At https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2019/08/26/giant-pumice-raft-from-underw... ... is it Armageddon? A giant raft of pumice from an undersea volcano is heading in the direction of the Great Barrier Reef. Indeed, it is being said that the pumice will not damage the reef but will cause it to prosper. This comes on the heels of a post by Jennifer Marohasy at her blog where she has recently participated in an underwater investigation of the reef and found it thriving - in the main.

Coopers Ferry

Excavations at Coopers Ferry in western Idahoe suggest people were living in that area 16,000 years ago. The arrival time continues to be pushed backwards . See https://phys.org/news/2019-08-artifacts-people-north-america-earlier.html ...

Solent Archaeology

At https://archaeologynewsnetwork.blogspot.com/2019/08/mesolithic-boat-buil... ... some years ago a boat building site going back 8000 years ago was found in the Solent - during what is known as the Mesolithic era (pre-farming). The Solent is the estuary leading into Southampton and its entrance is behind the Isle of Wight. In fact, Bouldnor Cliff is on the island and the remains were found at the foot of the cliff - most of the Solent having been robbed of its archaeology by the daily tides.

Roopkund Lake

At https://archaeologynewsnetwork.blogspot.com/2019/08/biomolecular-analyse... ... a study published in Nature Communications (August 2019) concerns the mysterious skeletons of Roopkund Lake in the Himalayan mountains - or foothills. It was initially thought they all died in a single catastrophic event - but analysis seems to show they died in two different events, one thousand years apart. The lake is shallow and has attracted attention due to the presence of skeletal remains of humans from what is thought to amount to several hundred bones.

Indoctrination

The SEPP newsletter of August 17th 2019 - see www.sepp.org - focusses on Nir Shaviv, a solar physicist in Israel. He has conducted a couple of interviews for the media which were subsequently disappeared. The interviews were not at his request but were initiated by interested reporters who obviously thought all angles of a subject should be explored and not just the one so called consensus theory. The first interview was axed by the editor and was never printed but the second one, interestingly, was written up and then pulled - which is how the matter came to public attention.

Methane Reservoir

At https://phys.org/news/2019-08-massive-methane-reservoir.html ... link forwarded by Robert (but see also https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2019/08/21/origin-of-massive-methane-res... ) ... which comes with some useful comments. New findings published in PNAS provide evidence of the formation and abundance of abiotic methane - methane formed by chemical reactions that do not involve organic matter. It shows that methane found on other planets and moons could well have a similar origin. It is no longer a mystery we are told. Abiotic methane exists.

Digging a Hole

At https://phys.org/news/2019-08-heavyweight-candidate-dark.html ... according to current theory a quarter of the universe is composed of dark matter - sitting in the shadows. Its presence is determined by gravitational pull. What dark matter is made of is a complete mystery. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics have come up with a new theory - the existence of a hypothetical particle, gravitinos. Its existence follows on from a theory that seeks to explain the spectrum of quarks and leptons in the standard model of particle physics.

Jurassic Volcanism

Robert sent in the link to www.dailymail.co.uk/science-tech/article-76363455/ ... with the comment, discharge lightning on Earth emits X-rays. It seems that if humans were able to see gamma-rays they might see the night sky would glow brighter than the daytime. This is the manner in which NASAs Fermi Gamma Ray Telescope sees our region of space. Currently, gamma-ray observations are not sensitive to seeing the shape of the Moon very clearly - or any of the surface details. It detects a prominent glow
