Planets Behaving Badly

Robert sent in this link to https://phys.org/print471088133.html ... latest data sent back from Jupiter and Saturn show that these two gas giants have not played ball with consensus theory. The magnetic and gravity data have confounded scientists it is alleged. There will be an update on the new discoveries at the March 2019 American Physical Society meeting - so be prepared for more revelations in the press release.

Days and Dinosaurs

At https://phys.org/print471074197.html ... dinosaurs were thriving immediately prior to the asteroid strike that decimated them we are told. This is a big step change by scientists who have been telling us for a long time dinosaurs were already in decline from climate change and the asteroid strike simply put them out of their agony. Resaerchers from UC London, Imperial College London, and the University of Bristol claim dinosaurs were not under stress - and far from it.

Dinosaurs and Birds

This post was sent in by Robert and must come under evolution rather than geology as it is speculative and from a Creationist attempt at rationalisation of recent claims that birds are directly descended from one branch of the dinosaurs. Go to https://crev.info/2019/03/why-is-china-the-leader-in-feathered-dinosaur-... ... and ignore the slant of the article which seeks to identify the Biblical flood with the demise of various life forms - including the dinosaurs. Are dinosaurs really the evolutionary predecessors of birds?

Water from Air

An Israeli company has created water from plain air and is set to globally expand its business - see www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Israeli-company-creating-water-from-plain-air-... ... Watergen draws air from the atmosphere into a water generator. There, a filter system cleans the air by removing dust and dirt. Once it is cleaned the air is passed through a heat exchanger and cooling process and is condensed into water. Its only requirement is access to electrictiy.

The Pantheon

At www.bldgblog.com/2007/04/the-heliocentric-pantheon-an-interview-with-wal... ... this pieces was sent in by Brian, a long time SIS member. He is hoping to open discussion with other members of the society - and presumably with anyone not in the society but who have a genuine interest in the subject matter of the post. This revolves around the Pantheon - built in the reign of Roman emperor Hadrian. We know about the wall he had built between Britannia and Caledonia but the Pantheon has to be the biggest dome built (at the time), 142 feet in diameter.

Earth Blobs

At https://eos.org/features/the-unsolved-mystery-of-the-earth-blobs/ ... sent in by William, the subject being the hot mantle below the crust which appears to harbour two blobs the length of continents. They are at the foot of the mantle - above the molten outer core. The blobs are made of rock as in the rest of the mantle but they are heavier or denser than the surrounding mantle. They were discovered by seismic tomography. Seismic waves travel more slowly through the blobs - suggesting they are dense. There is little doubt the blobs exist yet nobody knows what they are.

Kuiper Belt Objects

The outer solar system is a fairly quiet place we are assured. Not a lot of meteors or craters on the likes of Pluto and Charon. However, the orbital architecture of Kuiper Belt objects is odd - and it has been suggested they are controled by the gravity of the hypothetical Planet Nine. This is because known objects appear to bunch up tight in what is described as orbital clustering (see image below). Go to https://phys.org/print470495718.html ...

Hiawatha

At http://cosmictusk.com/plants-and-trees-in-hiawatha-crater/ ... we learn that the Hiawatha Crater recently found in NW Greenland, has organic carbon in the glacio fluvial sand seeping from the crater. It originates from the bedrock - gneiss. Some of the sand contains impact grains such as shocked quartz, impure mineral glasses and micro breccias. There are grains (in the breccia) that contain organic carbons (and can be read in full at the above link). The article was read at the 50th Lunar and Planetary science conference in 2019.

K/Pg Boundary Event

Geological chronology is at the heart of a division in earth sciences - between those that favour an asteroid impact and those that, instead, blame the Deccan Traps for the demise of the dinosaurs (and various other life forms). The Traps is a large eruption of lava in what is now India. At https://phys.org/print469949649.html ... we have more on the disupte which could easily be resolved if geologists accepted sediments can be laid down quickly on occasion.

Solar Minima but lots of geomagnetic activity

At https://phys.org/print470041521.html ... geomagnetic activity in Earth's atmosphere with an origin in the same on the Sun. A plasma stream, the solar wind, is causing some beautiful auroral displays in February. See the image below of aurora seen over Iceland in mid February. It is described in this piece as an electrification of the night sky ....
