An older universe?

At www.dailygalaxy.com September 20th Casey Kazan stirs the pot by asking, could the universe be older than cosmologists think? More powerful telescopes are upsetting the standard textbook theories - there are seeming contradictions. On of them is the discoveryof a large elliptical galaxy that is very distant and dated, by rred shift analysis, to something like 10 billion years ago.

Anasazi violence

At http://news.discovery.com/archaeology/genocide-native-americans-ethnic-cleansing.html ... is I think a regurgitation of an old story by Discovery News which has a habit of catching up a few days late - but in this instant a few months late. It probably amounts to ongoing research and excavation at the site - new season dig results. They describe the discovery of nearly fifteen thousand skeletal remains dating back to AD800.

Out of Africa

At www.bbc.co.uk/news/science_environment-11327442?print=true Sept 2Ist ... geneticists have estimated the the Out of Africa human migration to SE Asia and Australia took place around 60,000 years ago. However, stone tools found in Arabia and India recently point to an earlier date, possibly around 80,000 years ago.

The Raised Waters of the Exodus

At www2.ucar.edu/news/parting-waters-computer-modelling-captures-physics-red-sea-escape-route/ is a story that appeared on BBC News broadcasts and at www.physorg.com and www.sciencedaily.com and generally in lots of places that have nothing to do with religion - but hark back to a Biblical event that science has sought to downsize in the past.

Records in Stone

At www.cambridge.org/9780521531306 ... is an abstract of a book edited by Clive Ruggles, Records in Stone: Papers in Memory of Alexander Thom. As well as a chapter by Ruggles which is critical of Thom's choice of markers and notches in the horizon the other authors are impressive as they include Anthony Aveni, Ed Krupp, Archie Thom, Aubrey Burl, Hans Motz, Chris Jennings and one of the SIS founders, Euan MacKie, 'Investigating the Prehistoric Solar Calendar'

Big Conks and Curly Locks

The Peoples Daily in China (see http://english.peoplesdaily.com.cn/90001/90782/90873/7140112.html ) has a short story on a stone coffin from the Tang Dynasty (around AD800) which has a depiction of Greek like Europeans engraved on the outside - evidence of contact with Byzantium via the Silk Road.

Parallel universes and the Black Widow

Is gravity from a parallel universe creating dark energy? Casey Kazan at www.dailygalaxy.com has a different slant on a story that emerged a few weeks ago - the idea of gravity leaking from a parallel universe. The commenters at the end of what is a short piece are not impressed. Ivar Nielson of Denmark in particular.

Antarctica - when was it glaciated?

At www.thunderbolts.info?forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3566&start=0 ... one of the forums at Thunderbolts this week is on the release of Peter Jupp's new video - the subject is Antarctica. Peter Jupp is a member of SIS and attended the EU Presentation during the summer. We hope to have several of his videos available for sale to interested parties in the near future.

Symbols from the Sky in Cave Art

See http://seedmagazine.com/content/print/symbols_fromthe_sky/ ... sent in by Gary Gilligan this is essentially about Rappengluck's novel interpretation of cave art - at sites such as Lascaux and executed by Magdalenians (physically modern humans living in the final stages of the Ice Age). Rappengluck suggests the art has heavenly parallels, and dots and freckles on the animals (backs and face etc) actually represent groups of stars in the night sky such as the Hyades and the Pleiades.

Comet Halley Again

At http://io9.com/5637815/ there is another version of the Comet Halley appearance in 466BC - with a bit more history. It could have been visiting the inner solar system for anything between 16,000 and 200,000 years (see also the Journal of Cosmology). The Chinese record the comet in 240BC and it is thought the Babylonians (people of the Middle East) record it in 164 and 87BC (as well as Tigranes, an Armenian king) and in 12BC it may have sparked messianic expectations - but who can tell.
