Another meteor making noises

A small asteroid exploded in the atmosphere near Peurto Rico on June 22nd - see http://spaceweather.com (June 25th 2019). It occurred in broad daylight and the airwaves produced were detected by the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisanization's infra red station in Bemuda. The explosion was coincident with a cosmic body several metres across and according to NASA such meteors, on average, happen at least once a year. It had the blast energy of between 3 and 5 kilotons of TNT.

Salty Ice Age

You learn something new everyday. A sediment core from the Maldives is said to have preserved ocean water from the last Ice Age. How do they know? It is more salty than modern ocean water - go to https://phys.org/news/2019-05-scientists-ancient-seawater-ice-age.html ... The thinking is that during the Ice Ages lots of water was locked up in glaciers and ice sheets. Therefore there was less water in the oceans as it is known sea levels in the North Atlantic were much lower during the Late Glacial Maximum. Less water means the salt in sea water is not spread around as much = salty sea water.

Ivory tools and weapons

At www.ancient-origins.net/news-history-archaeology/weapons-site-0012187 ... this link appears to have got its information from the Siberian Times and concerns an island in the Arctic Ocean. It is being developed as a Russian military base as fossil fuel extraction in the Arctic becomes more probably and expansionary with the passage of time. Paleontologists have been involved in excavating a mammoth skeleton and they found the tusk displayed evence of what is said to be human activity, namely traces of processing.

Conspiracy Theory and the Brother of Jesus

This story is at www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/ossuary-james-0012181 ... this sounds like a conspiracy theory but is never the less of interest as it is controversial. An ossuary of James the Just was brought to the attention of scholars back in 2002 by one Oden Golen (an Israeli dealer in antiquities who likes to describe himself as a collector of antiquities). He has, so we learn in an off hand manner, also been involved withe forgeries which raised suspicion.

Off shore lake

Continental shelf systems are areas formerly above sea level but now submerged. Such regions may have been periodically submerged with variations in sea levels over geological time. However, the continental shelf system off the US North East has come up with a big surprise - it harbours a lake underneath the sea bed - go to https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2019/06/23/scientists-map-huge-undersea-... ... the lake is actually very deep down below the sea bed and is described as an aquifer (a source of water from an ancient era).

Rings around Uranus

At https://phys.org/news/2019-06-astronomers-uranus.html ... astronomers see a warm glow emanating from the rings of Uranus - via the ALMA telescope array. Its most prominent ring is composed of golf ball size rocks and larger - and there are 13 rings in all.

At https://phys.org/news/2019-06-stars-photons-revolutionize-space-flight.html ... star photons may revolutionise space flight - the solar sail. It has no engine, uses no fuel, and has no solar panels. Instead, it harnesses the momentum of light energy (photons). Will it work?

Subduction and Diamonds

At https://archaeologynewsnetwork.blogspot.com/2019/06/researchers-simulate... ... researchers simulate the extreme pressure and heat in the earth's Mantle - or what they assume is the extreme pressure exerted by the Mantle. This is not simulation via computer make believe as they seem to have conducted a genuine experiment - simulating the subduction process and the manufacture of diamonds. I may be wrong but that is how the press release reads - or my interpretation of what they are saying.

Crocodiles and Climate

At https://phys.org/news/2019-06-crocs-climate-clock-ancient-reveal.html ... the ancient distribution of crocodiles could be used to reveal information about past climate. On the other hand, they may reveal more about earth changes. It seems some crocodilians are sensitive to changes in temperature - but other kinds of crocodile are not. Or that is the theory been promulgated. Mapping the distribution of the different species of crocodilia (ostensibly using fossilised remains) may reveal more about 'global' climate millions of years ago.

Noctilucent Mystery

The prevalence of noctilucent clouds in June has sparked a lot of response from blog authors, mostly as a result of visiting http://spaceweather.com (post on June 19th 2019) ... which has the title 'mysterious moisture in the mesosphere' and its effects on noctilucent clouds. Their providence as far south as Los Angelese in California and Albuquerque in New Mexico (as well as repeated reports from Poland and Germany) make this year unusual to say the least.
