Giant Tunnels

At ... strange smooth walled tunnels cutting into rock faces in Brazil and Argentina have long been a puzzle to locals. You can even stand up in some of them. It was thought they were formed by water dissolving rock - but this is contradicted as the walls show they were made by something with very big claws (below) ...

Alaskan Tunnel

Keeping to the theme of tunnels, William forwarded a link but see ... a frozen tunnel in central Alaska was dug out by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the 1960s. It is 360 feet long and 6 to 8 feet hight and 15 feet wide. It is rich with frozen animal and plant remains, fossils of all kinds, and layers of fronzen silt, sand, and of course, bedrock. It is as if the Army had dug up some aspects of Velikovsky's 'Earth in Upheaval' - tunnelling into the Alaskan muck.

Byzantine Setback

At ... ancient rubbish mounds reveal a 6th century AD episode of climate change affecting a Byzantine town site in what is now Israeli territory. The rubbish, or trash mounds, were found outside the settlement of Elusa and a little digging revealed they formed by discarded material from the town, in a way suggesting an organised form of collection and deposit. They also found that the town had fallen on hard times - but what caused it. They suggest it was due to the plunge in temperatures after AD536 (sometimes known as the Late Antique Little Ice Age).

War and Disaster

Sent in by William - see ... is a guest post by Peter Mungo Jupp who runs the Ancient Origins web site. Around AD1348 there began the Hundred Years War, a series of skirmishes and full blooded battles that broke out between the kings of England and their former lands in France (as part of the Norman expansion several centuries earlier). It included the famous battles of Agincourt, Crecy, and Poitiers - which have gone down deep into the national psyche of both sides.

A Chinese fossil trove - see ... a team from two universities in China and one from the US has partially excavated a trove of fossils from the Cambrian so called Explosion - in southern China. They have also published a preliminary study in the journal Science (March 2019) - see DOI:10.1126/science.aaw8644. The period is best know from a western perspective from the Burgess Shale where internal organs and eyes were preserved. Since then other sites of the Cambrian have been found, all in shale beds.

Fantasies Pricked

At ... researchers at the University of Nottingham have found a higher percentage of natural fibres in freshwater habitats and in the atmosphere (in the air we breathe) than microplastic fibres - in the UK. By natural they mean wool and cotton rather than polyester or nylon.

Bennu and Ultima Thule

At ... data from the New Horizons mission is still filtering back and what has been revealed so far will be discussed at the 50th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas. Ultima Thule is regarded as a primordial object. It is 22 miles long and it has a large flat lobe connected to a smaller rounder lobe. The strange shape is the surprise. Apparently, we are told the two lobes once orbited each other but an unknown something brought them together - or that is the thinking at the moment. What caused them to join at the hip?

Galactic Chimney Works

At ... Australian National University scientists have found that Earth is made of the same elements as the Sun but has less of the volatile elements such as hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen. Rocky planets around stars may be devolatised pieces left over after the formation of stars.

Phew, Saved by the bell. It seems clones of Dr Strangelove types have been blocked by the US, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil - in the nick of time (just as the earth has entered cooling mode). The story is at ... it seems a motion has been derailed at the UN that sought to lace the sky with sunlight reflecting aerosols in order to bring imaginary global warming to an end. One may wonder what the true motive was as aerosols in the atmosphere are quickly washed away.

Graveyard Under Los Angeles

At ... work on an extension of the Metro system under Los Angeles has found numerous fossilised remains of Pleistocene animals that once roamed the grassland and forest that existed in the Bay area back then -  from mastadons to rabbits, camels to bison and horse bones - to elephant and sabre toothed cats.
