Shroud of Turin

In the true spirit of relics it would seem the Turin Shroud is a fake - go to https://phys.org/print451631541.html ... which differs from the findings of a study last year which claimed to have found evidence of trauma in the victim. Apparently, this earlier study has now been retracted by PLOS One - due to concerns about the quality of the data as used by the researchers (which refers to the conclusions they leaped to).

Holocene Geology

At https://phys.org/print451549404.html ... the Holocene is a blink in the eye of geochronology but this has not stopped the grandees fo the International Union of Geological Sciences from dividing it into 3 sections - each defined as a separate geological period. It probably gives their egos a boost but is it justified as the Holocene is littered with climatic downturns and upticks which they largely pass over. True, they have homed in on two very pronounced climatic episodes (which should have geological parallels that are yet unexplored). Why the divisions?

Cold blips in Eemian

This could be classified as geology but is really about climate - palaeoclimate. At https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/07/23/study-abrupt-shifts-occurred-in-t... ... in a similar vein to the previous post, this concerns abrupt shifts in ancient European climate - courtesy of the University of Helsinki. Big cold snaps occurred right across the Eeemian interglacial (120,000 years ago).

Brazil in LIA

At https://phys.org/print451717673.html ... isotopic records obtained from caves show how rainfall distribution in Brazil was affected by the Little Ice Age (Geophysical Research Letters, July 2018). They are defining the LIA as AD1500-1850 when average temperatures were lower than at present. In the 17th and 18th centuries climate in parts of Brazil was much wetter - but in the NE is was much drier.

Water on Mars

Much ado in the media - water on Mars. However, when you dig into the story the water is a mile deep and unavailable for astronauts to exploit. At https://phys.org/print451740783.html ... an underground lake on Mars, hiding beneath a layer of ice (and even worse, a mile under the surface). The lake is 12 miles wide - and life may exist (bacterial). The water may also be full of salts and minerals making it unfit for drinking purposes.

Tabloid Science

At https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/07/23/a-remarkable-essay-on-near-tabloi... ... refers to Judith Curry who has been doing some literature research for a new paper on climate science when she came across a paper by Carl Wunsch, oceanographer. It concerns paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology. It occurred to me the list of faults aimed at the CAGW community could also perhaps be aimed at some of the electric universe hype.

Sent in by Jovan. At www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/60-second-astronomy-news-must-see... .... a full array of 64 radio dishes that make up MeerKAT radion telescope was inaugurated on July 13th (2018). They released a streaming iamge of the Milky Way's central region, a panorama covering an area of 1000 light years by 500 light years ...

Rogue Star

Sent in by William. At https://phys.org/news/2018-07-rogue-star-makeup-solar.html ... did a rogue star change the makejup of our solar system? A team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute and Queens University in Belfast have been looking at a theory that claims a rogue star passed close enough to our solar system (millions of years ago of course) and changed its configuration. The research is published on the arXiv preprint server.

Revelations

Sent in by William. Interesting take on Revelations, the last book of the Bible. Trumpet judgement 1 includes a meteor or bolide, no 2 refers to a large meteor, no 3 a huge bolide, no 4 astral observation, and no 7 a great hail of stones. These ideas are expressed in 'Revelation: What Did John Really See?' by Phillip J Silvia ISBN 9780615866055 and available via www.biblicalresearchbulletin.com ... and presumably via online bookshops.

Gobekli in the News

Apparently, 15 monumental temples and some 200 standing stones have been discovered as part of a geophysical survey around Gobekli Tepe. See www.aa.com.tr/en/turkey/new-temples-stones-found-in-turkeys-gobeklitepe-... ... the T shaped obelisks are 10 to 20 feet high and weigh between 40 and 40 tones each.
