Comet Halley in the 5th century BC

At www.decodingtheheavens.com/blog/post/2010/09/08/Halley-and-the-ancient-Greeks/ (see also BBC News September 10th) ... in 466BC a large meteortie, described as the size of a wagon load, fell in northern Greece.

End of Ice Age - New Zealand

At www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100908132214.htm a new paper in Nature seems to indicate that New Zealand was not affected by the Younger Dryas cooling event. Antarctic ice cores are reputed not to record a cold phase of around 1000+ years that is extremely prominent in the northern hemisphere.

The Trojan War

It seems that some European scholars have recognised there might be a connection between a comet or meteor and the end of the Late Bronze Age which in turn sparked an earthquake storm across the plate boundaries from the Aegean and Anatolia to at least as far east as Pakistan and India. Two articles in a book, Science and Technology in Homeric Epics (2008) are relevant. One is by Amanda Laouipi and the other by SP Papamarinopondas.

Red Rain update

At www.technology.review.com/blog/arxiv/25699/ Sept 1st ... 'The extraordinary Tale of Red Rain, Comets and Extraterrestrials' is the title but the shortish piece on the blog does not give much away - you need to read the paper on the earlier post on the same subject. Panspermia is not a mainstream fancy in science but a growing body of evidence suggest it is a subject to be explored rather than casually ignored - given the treatment.

Titbits of History

At www.physorg.com/print202991457.html Sept 6th ... there is a report that says Irish scientists have found fragments of Egyptian papyrus in the leather cover of an ancient book of psalms that was unearthed from a peat bog where it had been preserved. This is the first tangible connection between early Irish Christians and the Coptic Church, according to the National Museum of Ireland. The manuscript's leather binding also has an origin in Egypt - but the manuscript inside the cover was produced in an Irish monastery.

A second pole slip ... what next ...

At www.physorg.com/print202971192.html Sept 6th ... for a second time evidence has been found the magnetic poles have flipped over in a very rapid manner. Geologists in 1995 found a lava flow in Oregon with an unusual magnetic pattern indicating it had shifted 10,000 times faster than expected. This was hotly disputed in geological circles and was so controversial many scientists simply still do not accept such an event. It does not fit into a uniformitarian context.

The Etruscans, the Hittites, Luwians, and others

Also on the New Chronology Yahoo Group forum in August has been a discussion of tawannas, a title used by Hittite queens, and the spread of that term by the Philistines and Etruscans - in late 9th century on the New Chronology framework. In that context the migration might well be visualised as primarily a migration of people from SE Anatolia (at the end of the LB Age) with minimal connections with the Aegean. There are a lot of emails on the subject with a diverse number of points of view - too many to repeat here.

New Chronology and Jonah

At http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/NewChronology/message/29214 ... there are a lot of emails to wade through on this lively and very active Yahoo Group (requires a membership to read the emails), enough to faze even the most receptive of minds - but far from dulls the revisionist faithful. This one caught my eye after a brief trawl and was posted by Frank Taylor of North Carolina.

Fire in the Sun

At www.thunderbolts.info/tpod/2010/arch10/100903fire.htm the Greeks and Romans had a variety of theories on what might power the Sun and surprisingly, the notion they had in the back of their heads was not very different from a plasma filled universe. Even the astronomer, John Herschel, in the 18th century, wrote a letter to Faraday speculating that the Sun might owe its brightness to cosmic electrical currents - with the upper atmosphere of the Sun auroralised by them ...
