Asphalt Domes

At www.physorg.com/print191397828.html April 25th ... in 700 feet deep water off Santa Barbara in California is a series of asphalt domes that it is thought derive from flows of petroleum deposited by an underwater volcano 35,000 years ago. The deposits hardened into asphalt domes (see Nature Geoscience April 25th). The domes were discovered by a deep submersible vehicle and were teeming with life - like an artificial reef.

Troy is in the wrong place?

At http://troyatbergama.blogspot.com there is a new blog devoted to the idea ancient Troy was located not at it's usual location, Hisarlik - but at Bergama, an idea first aired by John Lascelles (a book reviewed by SIS several years ago). There are several pages on the blog for starters - and as blogs develop they grow into many pages (so expect more news on the subject over the coming months). At the moment there is a series of pages that outline the general theory.

Ignimbrites

At http://sites.google.com/site/dragonstormproject/ is a blog devoted to a comet firestorm that contributed to the YD cooling event and faunal extinctions 13,000 years ago. He especially targets what is known as Ignimbrite geological formations found in the Chihuahua desert of northern Mexico - which he calls 'fire cloud rock'. They have the look of wet fast flowing concrete or lumpy mud in satellite images.

Dating the YD Event

At http://scienceblogs.com/highlyallochthonous/2007/10/out-of-the-ice-age-into-the-as.php April 23rd ... 'Out of the Ice Age, into the Asteroid shower' is a post by Chris Rowan which begins, '21,000 years ago, at the peak of the last glacial, ice sheets covered most of western Europe and North America (a bit of an exaggeration but never mind), and by 10,000 years ago a warming climate had melted them away ...'.

Lawrence Dixon and retrocalculation of the Vernal Equinox

Lawrence Dixon has produced a two page article on retrocalculation of the vernal equinox. SIS Workshop has published a series of articles on a revision of dating of the AD period - evidence against and evidence that is open to query. These have tended to centre around the Venerable Bede but the Church and it's calculations of the vernal equinox in relation to Easter dates (keeping them separate from the Jewish Passover) are an intriguing facet of this research. Is the conventional position as secure as they like to think it is?

Lopsided Core ... of the Earth...

At www.physorg.com/print191053615.html April 21st ... the inner core at the centre of the earth is growing as a result of crystalliation of iron in the liquid 'outer core' - so much so the 'solid core' permanently drifts eastwards. Why is the inner core asymmetrically out of shape? New light has been shed on this by research published in Science on April 16th. Variations in the core appear to match up directly with the shape of the earth's magnetic field.

Hidden Wonders of Sardinia

At http://www.stonepages.com/news/archives/003769.html you will find a report of a tour of Sardinian megalithic tombs, two pages of text. The tombs contain images painted in red ochre on the stones which include spirals and huge heads of bulls. The tombs are currently dated to the Ozeiri culture, 3800-2900BC. In one of the tombs a series of spirals form a sort of tree of life.

Searching for Neutrinos

At www.physorg.com/print190976193.html April 20th ... a series of detectors to capture cosmic rays striking the Earth has been set up in Antarctica with the idea of finding neutrino generated signals bounced off the bottom of the ice cap. It is hoped they will be able to pinpoint the unidentified source of ultra high energy cosmic rays. The Earth is constantly peppered by showers of debris from cosmic ray outburst colliding with atoms in the atmosphere.

Fireballs ... and fire ...

At http://cosmictusk.com April 20th ... reports of a fireball over Wisconsin were accompanied by reports of fires breaking out on the ground. This prompted Bob Kobres (see www.abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/ ) to check his files and he found something similar occurred in Jordan on April 18th 2001 (almost exactly 9 years ago). Eyewitness reports again reported ground fires and tree fires. The general public might think there is nothing peculiar about this, as fireballs = fire. Right? No.
