Inuit Oil Barons to be ... cold weather in the 18th century

At ... it seems oil geologists are looking seriously at Greenland for untapped reserves of the black sticky substance. As can be expected the environmentalists are not very happy about this - they want oil to run out. Oil extraction is dubbed exploitation of the environment - which says it all. Unfortunately,as far as Greenland is concerned the lobby has soiled the patch. The Inuit do not have fond memories of Greenpeace and their soulmates as they campaigned to stop seal hunting - and Inuit are the major population group of Greenland.

Ozone Hole

The ozone hole above the Arctic has got the doomsayers red around the ears. It is the subject of reports at and 'Record depletion of Arctic ozone layer causing increased uv radiation in Scandinavia' and at - in the Science News story the hole is actually a thinning - quite different.

Climate papers ... early April

At - one of the bugbears to global warming theory is the fact the earth cooled from the 1940s to the late 1970s - and here is a paper from the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics April 2011 that claims it was due to the testing and detonation of nucleur devices in the 1950s and 1960s. When reading claims like these one wonders why they have to scratch the depths - if AGW was taking place it would be self evident without embroiderment.

North Atlantic Weather

At scientists have been finding out why it is cold in NE America but not in NW Europe at the same latitude (a paper in Nature, March 31st 2001). It is 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer in NW Europe than it is on the opposite side of the Atlantic. It seems the same thing occurs in the Pacific where winters in the Vancouver and Seattle region are mild in comparison with the same latitude on the eastern side of the ocean.

Climate Update as we head towards the end of March

Over at Piers Corbyn is predicting some extreme weather or even an earthquake in the next few days - as a result of solar activity. Meanwhile, at we learn that sea ice extent is at nearly its lowest point - ever (or since the modern AGW phenomenon took root some 25 to 30 years ago). However, at where we learn the opposite side of things. It is not the extent that matters, it is being argued, but the thickness of the ice.

The Earth is Greening

At ... global warming or not the earth's biosphere appears to be benefiting from increased C02 in the atmosphere - the earth is greening. This post is based on one paper by three Chinese scientists, Liu et al, 'Spatial and temperal variations of global LAI during 1981-2006' in the Journal of Geophysical Sciences 20 (2010) - the LAI in this instance stands for Leaf Area Index.

Green fuel

At March 22nd. The headline says it all - this particular biofuel creates more C02 than burning coal or oil. Third world countries are being encouraged by green western governments to reduce emissions and bring a halt to the destruction of rainforest - or any other wild and green place.

The Sun and global warming theory

There is a lovely post at ... basically, it has been assumed that solar activity was not trending upwards, a situation endlessly trotted out by climate scientists that had the goal of negating solar activity as a cause of the 1990s/early 2000s spike in global temperatures.

Global Warming on Mars

At there is a story, 'Chasma Boreale, Mars' with an image supplied by NASA. The chasm is a long flat floored valley that cuts deep into the Mars polar ice cape. Its walls rise up 4600 feet and it seems the ice has retreated as sheets of sand are emerging that accumulated in earlier ice free periods. The depiction comes from images taken between 2002 and 2005 by the Thermal Emissions Imaging System onboard the Mars Odyssey spacecraft. Melting ice on Mars appears to replicate melting mountain glaciers on the earth - why?

Disappearing the contrarians

Although this story was flying around the blogosphere a few weeks ago it never reached much of a drama - and it is still quite low key. However, the day may well be coming when Google loses its golden shine and that aura of all things bright and wonderful.
