Saturn's Rings

Robert sent in the link ... from January 3rd. Cassini's experiment, the Cosmic Dust Analyser, has found the micrometeorite flux of Saturn's rings is 'inconsistent with an old age' and they are estimated at between 150 and 300 million years ago. In other words, they could be much younger. The link favours a much younger age.

20,000 years ago plus

At ... excavations at a site in Alaska have found genetic lines of early Native Americans that may have entered N America more than 20,000 years ago. The findings are published in the journal Nature (January 2018). It is though they arrived from Siberia and continued to have contacts with Siberia for a considerable period of time - finally losing that contact at the end of the Ice Age. The Bering Land Bridge is touted as their route of entry - but equally they could have arrived by boat.

As Is

There were 485 scientific papers published in 2017 that support a sceptical position on climate alarmism. Is the climate consensus crumbling? See ... or as is (alarmism still flourishes). Doubt is being cast on the idea co2 emissions are the control knob of climate - and on the efficacy of the those models. The 485 papers affirm the position that there are significant limitation and uncertainties inherent in our understanding of climate and climate change.

Peter Warlow Vindicated

First of all, please note global warming has just got to the Sahara - see ... global warming has just got to the Sahara - for the second year in a row. Global warming is getting everywhere (see satellite image below) ...

Head up a Black Hole

At ... Funny old world. Apparently, if you do not studiously follow the mainstream in science you should be shut up and and sacked. In taking the Michael out of his virulent critic he was able to call the bluff. He had made the point that black holes have never been proven and are basically a hypothesis. He was immediately targeted by an irate blogger and accused of being anti-science (among other things). Have a read - and a smile.

Iron Throne

At ... is there an iron throne in the newly discovered chamber of Cheops pyramid? This refers to the discovery by Japanese researchers of a large void at least 30m in length within the pyramid. Speculation is mounting that an iron throne may exist in the newly discovered chamber - or roof space. A throne of Cheops mother, Hetepheres, has been found - made of cedar wood covered in sheets of gold and faience.

Hoxne Hoard

See ... the story of how a lost hammer in a field led to the discovery of the Hoxne Hoard in Suffolk. The farmer went and got hold-of a metal-detector-to search for a hammer that he had lost but found a cache of Roman coins and Roman silver. Why had it been buried?

Misbehaving Comets

At we have 3 stories on comets currently visible with binoculars (posts dated 10th and 11th January). One concerns a strange blue comet beyond the orbit of Mars - comet Pan Starrs. Active jets of gaseous material are streaming from the comet nucleus and feeding a tail that is full of swirls ...

At ... diluvicursors were turkey sized herbivorous dinosaurs. These are orthinopods but diluvicursors are a sub species and the new find is of a slightly different nature and touted as a new version of diluvicursor (if that makes sense). Hopefully it does. Diluvicursor pickeringii is named after a chap with the surname Pickering (a good Yorkshire name). It was discovered in rocks in SE Australia. To be more exact, in Lower Cretaceous rocks of a sedimentary basin.

Yorkshire Woodhenge

At ... excavations at a quarry in East Yorkshire have come across what was a henge (without the stones) - one made with tree posts. It is circular in shape with a surrounding ditch and bank (classic henge dynamics). However, there is also a bit of a mystery - lots of burnt stones. You can often come across heaps of burnt flints in Iron Age enclosures in various locations in the UK but the professionals usually take a view that doesn't leave them hanging themselves out with a theory that may prove to be wrong.
