Rhynie People

At ... this comes courtesy of The Conservation, a media source that has good ones amidst lots of corny or very bad stories. The Tap O'Noth is a famous hill fort near Rhynie in Aberdeenshire. It is situated on a hill above the village of Rhynie. Drone footage by an aerial 3D laser scanning device has revealed a huge settlement dating from the 3rd to the 6th centuries AD.

Reindeer and Food Production

At ... reindeer were domesticated much earlier than thought. Incredibly, it was believed it occurred only a few hundred years ago. They now have evidence that in Siberia, at least, it goes back a couple of thousand years. It may of course go back much further in time as hunter gatherers were managing herds of red deer in the Mesolithic period so why not reindeer where they were the primary species. It seems to be a case of 'if I didn't see it and then it didn't happen ...'.

A behemoth ammonite - not the fabled Jewish or Canaanite monster. At ... as sent in by Robert. An enormous fossil ammonite weighing over 200 pounds and 2 feet in diameter has been found by fossil hunting students on the Isle of Wight. No doubt they have been using lockdown to good use. It took them ten hours to extract it from the rock face. They say it goes back to the Cretaceous period - although ammonites are found in earlier strata. The Isle of Wight is chalk country - hence its name ....

distance measurements and cosmology

Robert also sent in this link to ... new distance measurements bolster challenge to basic model of universe. A new set of precision measurements using a modern telescope array suggest cosmologists need to revise the standard model of the universe. Or that is the big headline. What do they mean by this. Some sort of tinkering with the model. Robert is sceptical. He adds, perhaps they should admit their consensus model does not work. At all.

The highly detailed images have revealed infrastructure that excavations would have missed. A Crocodile that Walked like a Dinosaur

William also sent in a link to this sotry. See for example ... a species of ancient crocodiles walked on their two hind legs like a dinosaur yet measured 3m in length. The set of one hundred animal tracks came from what is now South Korea.

Tall el-Hammam is Sodom

An article by Daniel H King at ... explains why he, as a PhD in Biblical Studies, has become convinced that Tall el-Hammam is the Biblical city of Sodom. Well worth a browse although it is worth keeping in mind that the attachment to sodomy may be something added to the story of the destruction long after its demise. It was abandoned for 700 years as people considered it was cursed. This is probably the biggest city so far discovered that was obliterated by a cosmic blast.

At ... Here we have it - from the horses mouth (or so it would seem looking at the headline). Neanderthals and Denisovans and Humans (Late Palaeolithic onwards) are closer, genetically, than polar bears are to brown bears. This is a bizarre claim, one might think, as polar bears are known to have evolved from brown bears after adapting to the Arctic.

Mayan LiDAR find

William sent in the link ... but the story is also available elsewhere - such as ... LiDAR technology, from an aeroplane, has discovered a number of ancient meso-american structures, otherwise unknown. This one was found on the border between Mexico and Guatemala and is thought to date from between 1000 and 800BC. The ceremonial building at the site is larger than any other in the entire Mayan history ....
