East Asia during the Ice Age

At http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/culture/2011-08/03/c_131027429.htm ... Chinese and Japanese archaeologists say that stone tools (of a particular kind),  common to China, Japan, and Korea, and dating from 25,000 years ago, the height of the Late Glacial Maximum (in Europe and N America), are evidence of a land bridge between what are now islands and a peninsular, separated from the mainland. It is possible the continental shelf system off the coast of East Asia was completely different during the Ice Age.

The mirror in the universe

At www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2011/08/could-mirror-matter-be-the-hidden-... (Augusts 4th) ... begins with, if dark matter exists it may take the form of mirror planets, mirror stars, and mirror galaxies (a bit of a mirage it would seem). The failure of physicists to actually find tangible evidence of dark matter has led to the idea of 'mirror matter' (basically a spatial reflection of ordinary matter).

Question mark over c02 - human or natural?

The domino effect predicted that once the CAGW hypothesis began to unwind  new papers would come thick and fast and bury the idea in a terminal fashion. We might ask is this now happening as following close on the heels of the paper by Professor Roy Spencer we have this story at http://joannenova.com.au/2011/08/blockbuster-planetary-temperature-contr... which is a report on a speech by Professor Murry Salby at the Sydney Instiitute, 'Global emissions of carbon dioxide: the contributions from natural sources.

Sea Ice, drought ...

At www.physorg.com/print231687171.html ... a paper in Science (August 5th) by Danish researchers from the University of Copenhagen has looked at summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean throughout the Holocene (roughly the last 10,000 years). For the period 6000-3000BC, known as the Mid Holocene Warm Period, there was far less sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and the coast of northern Greenland was buffeted by waves.

Water on Mars?

NASA News at www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-242&cid=release_2011-242 claims they have discovered water on Mars - briny water that flows in spring but disappears in the winter. However, the images are in regions too cold for water yet some kind of volatile has been detected - hence the idea of salty water.

At www.physorg.com/print231669586.html we hear that NASA is reporting two active regions on the Sun, or in general terms, two sunspots have sprouted and a solar flare is being predicted.

Velikovsky, Hibben, and the Alaska 'muck' deposits

Velikovsky in Earth in Upheaval, at the very beginning of the book and therefore in order to draw the reader's attention, chose to quote Hibben on the Alaska muck deposits (he also quotes Rainey). Hibben was specific that the muck had a catastrophic origin - by tsunami or whatever. Hibben's article in American Antiquity, 1943 (volume 8:3) has over the last 60 years or so come under a lot of fire by detractors - but has enjoyed a consistent vogue amongst catastrophists of various persuasions, and is quoted endlessly by creationists resistant to uniformitarianism.

Panning out ....

As record sea ice melt this summer appears to have stalled we also learn that Scandinavian lakes during the 1970s and 1980s were not as acidified as environmental activists at the time got into a tizzy about - blaming the British coal industry and putting thousands of miners out of work (see www.physorg.com/print231391630.html ). Tides

At www.physorg.com/print231409994.html ... a paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research (Aug 2011) has been looking at tides in the early to mid Holocene and they have discovered some serious differences with the tides of today. For example, on the east coast of North America tides were 10 to 20 feet high compared with 3 to 6 feet of  today, and tides in the Bay of Fundy, which are now very extreme, at 55 feet, were much less 5000 years ago. At that time tides on the coast of the Carolinas south to Florida were much higher than today.

Comet Elenin

At http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/07/31/roll-to-observe-elenin-stereo-behi... we learn that NASA has just rolled its STEREO solar satellite to have a look at Comet Elenin P/2010X1, a comet which has attracted a lot of hullabaloo. The comments to this story are therefore worth browsing. One link for a sober look at Elenin is www.skyandtelescope.com/community/skyblog/observingblog/119704774.html
