4 Nov 2010 The Book of the Dead BBC News November 1st (see www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-11669904 ) has a video of the Egyptian Book of the Dead - a sequence of pages of papyri that appear to open one after the other. In reality the papyri are very fragile and one of them is 37 metres in length - so this is a succession of images. Still, very useful and well worth looking at. |
4 Nov 2010 Mammoth and Mastodon cache in the Colorado Mountains The mountains of Colorado are not recognised as a haunt of mammoth or mastodon - but they are digging them up at a reservoir near a ski resort (see www.aspendaily.com/print/143477 ). The reservoir had been drained and the bottom was being dug out by bulldozers when the bones were found - and the search is being expanded. Mastodons are usually found in eastern North America. In addition, a complete juvenile mammoth was found intact buried in silt. |
4 Nov 2010 Mars - asteroid strike? ... gamma ray bubbles and a newly found neutrino Mars does not have much in the way of an atmosphere - or a magnetic field. It is being suggested its protective shield was switched off half a billion years ago by an asteroid strike (see www.dailygalaxy.com November 3rd). The Mars Global Surveyor sent back data in 2009 that seemed to indicate something like that occurred - using computer simulation modelling techniques. |
4 Nov 2010 Approaching Comet Hartley2 At www.physorg.com/print207909976.html ... the Deep Impact spacecraft has captured images of multiple jets emanating from the surface of comet Hartley2, switching on and off. The spacecraft was 5 million miles away from the comet when the images were taken and there is a small video which can be viewed simply by clicking on an arrow as a start up. Turn up the volume on your computer before doing so. Is cometary science about to change? |

3 Nov 2010 Volcanoes At www.physorg.com/print207817646.html we learn that some 22 volcanoes in Indonesia are displaying evidence of increased activity. Mount Merapi is periodically belching hot gas and debris and making people feel very nervous. Its slopes are covered in ash and many people have been evacuated - but other volcanoes are stiring from slumber. |
3 Nov 2010 Great Apes - as smart as some of us? Not a big deal, you might say, I know that already. At www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/10/101006085450.htm ... a University of Portsmouth research scientist studying great apes and their developmental processes, has compared infant apes with infant humans - and hopes to overturn inbuilt prejudices against the apes. |
2 Nov 2010 Saturn's rings oscillate ... and more tales of salmon numbers At http://jpl.nasa.gov/news/ November 1st .... images captured by the Cassini spacecraft and published in the Astronomical Journal (November) indicate the rings of Saturn behave in a similar way to the Milky Way galaxy - having an irregular and varying shape. |
2 Nov 2010 Tall Bloke The Tall Bloke blog is worth looking at as it ties in with ideas about the EU and those of Rhodes Fairbridge. As he is discussing real science the commenters tend to be level headed individuals who have something to contribute to the debate. A joy to read. |
31 Oct 2010 Temple of the Winds New Scientist August 21st ... Thomas Hardy's temple of the winds, Stonehenge, might have been constructed to take into account sound effects - from voices and not just the wind whistling between the stones. Some archaeologists have taken an interest in acoustics - caves that sing, Maya temples that seem to chirp, burial mounds that hum, and stones that reverberate like an echo chamber - even ring like a gong when banged. This is an emphemeral kind of archaeology and not everyone's cup of tea - but how much of it is in the head? |
