Stone Forests

At first I thought from the headline they were talking about petrified forests, but no. The stone forests (a sea of trees) are the pointy bits on mountains - in China and Madagascar for example. How they were created is the subject of another experiment, of a sort. They have puzzled geologists for some time. The research showed that flowing water carves ultra sharp spikes in land forms. Simulation is involved of course, so we may assume not every possibility was included in the experiment, such as the sort of landscape carving featured on Electric Universe videos.

At ... the asteroid that struck earth at the K/T boundary came in at an angle of 60 degrees according to a new study. This is said to have maximised the amount of climate changing gases that subsequently ascended into the upper atmosphere. It likely unleashed billions of tonnes of sulphur, blocking out the sun.

Frankie goes to Cantre'r Gwaelod

Robert sent in this link - ... Storm Francis, or Frankie, has exposed parts of a petrified Welsh forest  that has been submerged for around 4500 years, it is alleged. The petrified trees, possibly not entirely turned to stone, or even marginally stone like in composition, were uncovered by the storm and high tides on the west coast of Wales, at Llanrhystud on Cardigan Bay to be exact ...

Roman Lincolnshire

Link sent in by Kevin - ... the remains of humans and ancient buildings have been unearthed during the construction of a by pass at Grantham in Lincolnshire. The remains date to the the Roman period, from 100AD to perhaps as late as 400AD. They came across thousands of artifacts beneath what will be the Southern Relief Road.

Resonating Cavities and the Sponge

The sponge is the interior of a comet and the cavities are on the sun. At ... sun spots are darker regions that appear periodically on the face of the sun. They are caused by strong concentrations of a magnetic field, it is thought. Oscillations in the sun's atmosphere has been interpreted as magnetic waves. Sun spots appear to transfer energy from interior layers to the outer regions of the sun's atmosphere.

A Particle Accelerator in the Sky

At ... the earth's magnetic field traps high energy particles in order to thwart their entry into the atmosphere. When the first satellites were launched into space, scientists like James Van Allen, discovered high energy regions, now known as the Van Allen belts. They look like two giant doughnut shaped formations encompassing the planet in a sort of sheaf. A new study from Germany shows that electrons in these radiation belts can be accelerated to very high speeds, locally.

Yukon in the Younger Dryas

At ... a new technique has led to the extraction of DNA from soil for analysis, pulling the genomes of hundreds of animals and thousands of plants from less than a gram of sediment. A remarkable claim. As such, scientists now say they can reconstruct ancient environments that existed thousands of years ago. They analysed samples from four sites in the Yukon, each representing a different point in the transition from the Pleistocene to the Holocene, roughly 11,000 years ago.

Literacy in Judah

This story  has surface once again as a result of further studies - see ... a new study concerns widespread literacy in the Biblical period, in the 7th century BC kingdom of Judah. This follows the discovery of handwriting by 12 different individuals based at a fort at Arad, guarding the caravan route to Arabia, at the borders of the kingdom of Judah. People could read and write, Probably not the peasant class, the rural farming  communities, but certainly, the more refined classes.

Cave Bear preserved intact

Robert sent in two links. the first one is at ... the first ever preserved adult cave bear has been found on an island in the Arctic Ocean, one of the New Siberian islands, Bolshoy Lyakhovsky island. Even its nose is intact (see below). It died at an estimated 39,000 years ago, around the same time that Neanderthals disappeared. Previously, cave bears have only been known from bones (in caves). This specimen is a whole carcass with soft tissue intact.

Life came full blown

One to make you think. Gary sent in this link - ... a radical  new theory rewrits the story of how life on earth began. The idea that life emerged fully formed has always seemed unlikely. However, evidence is emerging, we are told, that all the key molecules for life can form from the same simple carbon based chemistry. They also combine to make startlingly life like proto-cells. Perhaps Welby and his mates need to wake up and smell the marmalade. Or is that coffee.
