Transparent Crystals

At https://phys.org/news/2020-01-transparency-crystals-ultrahigh-piezoelect... ... ultra high piezo electricity in crystals causes them to become transparent - is this another feature of electricity in Earth and beyond Earth. In an experiment, AC electricity was added to a ferro electric piezoelectric crystal and it caused an enhanced effect, contrary to mainstream ideas. See https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1891-y

Phosphorus and Life

at https://wattsupwiththat.com/2020/01/16/astronomers-reveal-interstellar-t... .. which comes with lots of very interesting comments. Astronomers reveal an interstellar thread of one of life's building blocks - phosphorus. It is present in human and animal DNA and cell membranes  and is an essential element of life, we are told. Phosphorus is also in the food we eat - such as meat and dairy products. How it arrived on Earth is presented as a mystery that has now been solved by astronomers.

Horses and Volcanoes

Robert sent in this link too - www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7890053/ ... which provides images from the recent eruption in the Phillippines. Robert says the gruesome images hint at the scale of catastrophism required to form fossils. In one image, below, we can see faint stratified layers in the volcanic deposit partiallly burying a horse - which gives an idea how polystrate fossils formed. Various other farm animals were also overcome by the hot ash and people seem to have fled leaving livestock behind. The horses had been used to carry tourists up to the summit for the view.

Sea Levels

At https://notrickszone.com/2020/0/16/19-papers-published-in-2019-affirm-se... ... I could have posted this under geology but the link is to a climate sceptic site in Germany. The claim is that 19 papers were published in 2019 affirming sea level was metres higher than today between 8 and 4 thousand years ago. Pierre Gosselin says this is an onslaught of paleo climate evidence for warmer than now Mid Holocene climate. Something was distinctly different back then.

Fearful Vikings

At www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7868431/ ... we have a rather misleading header - 'mysterious Viking inscription reveals they feared climate change'. As most of modern climate  change is non-existent and in any case involves warming which is not a problem to most people, especially those living in northern Europe, it kind of trivialises what has been revealed. The inscription belongs to a period of time when real climate change was happening - the 6th century AD (otherwise known as the post Roman Little Ice Age).

Venus Statue

Tricky one this. At https://archaeologynewsnetwork.blogspot.com/2020/01/discovery-of-17000-y... .... concerns the discovery of a Palaeolithic Venus figurine which is said to be 17,000 years old. It was unearthed in Romania and excited the local archaeologists at first and now might become an embarrassment. It was unearthed by two amateur archaeologists (the professionals had gone home and for some reason these two took it upon themselves to root around).

Jupiter chucking stuff at Earth

The two links below were sent in by Gary. At www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7870125/ ... Mars is losing water faster than previously thought we learn. This may effect the search for life - as water is the assumed key. It is thought water on Mars was a fact - in the past. A residue is still locked up in polar ice caps. Indeed, NASAs Global Surveyor, a few years ago, found gullies that may have been created by flowing water - although that is an open question.

Crater

Sent in by William and by Gary, and Robert as well. Ay www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-7868821/ ... a crater has been uncovered that was left behind by what is described as a giant meteor that is thought to have hit the Earth around 800,000 years ago. In other words, during the Pleistocene geological period. The meteor has been suspected for many years but the site of its crater has remained elusive. It is now said it exists under a thick layer of volcanic lava on the Bolaven Plateau in Laos.

Misalignment of New Build

An interesting study at https://phys.org/news/2020-01-counterclockwise-puzzle-early-neolithic-ho... ... Early Neolithic house plans in central and eastern Europe appear to display small changes in orientation and this has puzzled archaeologists. They were picked up by geophysical magnetic measurements. In a new study they are said to be due to 'pseudo-neglect' - on the observation that healthy people prefer their left visual field rather than the right. They are inclined to divide a line regularly left of centre.
