Basically, the story revolves around fossilised trees standing upright through different layers of sedimentary rock. These are known as Polystrate formations – ancient trees, or anything of a very large size including whales standing on their tails, in a vertical position. The sediments, according to uniformitarian geology, formed over hundreds, or thousands of years. This is a belief geologists hold dear as it eliminates the idea of a Biblical flood in order to explain catastrophic deposits. These layers were obviously laid down quickly. However, that doesn’t mean it has anything to do with the Biblical flood. The earth has experienced multiple extinctions and catastrophic events – over a very long period of time. This is pretty much what Derek Ager has to say. As a geologist of note, prepared to accept the occasional catastrophic event – mostly localised as in a flash flood or a volcano. Derek Ager is getting a bit long in the tooth now and is obviously retired, yet was still consulted. He had a bit of a reputation as he was prepared to look at alternative explanations to that of the more orthodox geologist, sticking rigidly to the uniformitarian model. He even agreed that the tree very obviously did not survive long enough for those sediments to be laid down in a gradual manner. Hence, they must have been laid down quickly. He didn’t accept the connection with the Biblical flood – or a serious downdating of the geological column. That is probably the best one could get out of a geologist, committed as he is, or was, to geological reappraisal. Ager did not go far enough. In a real catastrophic model the geological record is a catalogue of catastrophic events. Geology has not preserved the periods in between catastrophes, Hence, most of the periods where nothing of moment happened have not been left behind for modern people to study. There are missing links galore.
Polystrate fossils are found all over the world. We are told that Joggins Fossil Cliffs are worth checking out. Might be in a post in the next few days.
