Particles flipped through the Earth’s magnetic field – beyond the Van Allen Belt. It seems the energetic electrons may not have actually shoved themselves through that barrier but were accelerated on the other side – between Van Allen and the top of the atmosphere. I’m not sure if the author of the piece has it right but the point made in the research paper is that local particle acceleration took place rather than inwards transportation of high energy particles. The storm also affected Earth’s plasmasphere – taking 4 or 5 days to recover.
