Post Normal and all that

Inside science

At http://i-squared.blogspot.com/2009/12/green-snake-in-grass.html … is a rant about Post Normal Science and its role in AGW doomsaying. Not sure if it is relevant as it has a wisp of conspiracy about it, but an interesting observation.

Meanwhile, at www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2010050/posts we have a story, 'Will Mercury hit the Earth' which the blog has derived from the web site of Sky and Telescope, the magazine you can find on newsagent shelves. However, this is not a resurrection of Worlds in Collision but the inference is that the solar system is vaguely unstable – Jupiter's gravity is capable of moving Mercury from its orbit. A computer simulation is at the heart of the story, and yes, none of us will be around when it happens an astronomical period of time in the future. The original research was published in Icarus (in 1996) and in The Astrophysical Journal (in 2011).
