Making Waves

29 August 2013
Climate change

Lots of fuss surrounding the new paper concerning the role of the ocean in the recent cooling of global temperatures – all blamed on La Nina in the Pacific. Never mind the missing heat has flown off into space or the role of the Sun in regular warm and cool cycles, making waves is much more exciting. Mind you, if La Nina is responsible for the current trend downwards why are they not saying El Nino had a heavy hand to play in the warming in the 1990s? It seems there are two different ways of looking at this paper. CAGW enthusiasts see it as a positive – they can blame the missing heat on a cool spot in the Pacific Ocean. Sceptics also see it as a positive because if the 1930s warmth was caused by solar activity so too is most of the 1990s uptick in global temperatures. What's not to like. Everyone is happy. Well, not everybody it seems as the CAGW faithful are quite keen to tell us all that there was no increase in solar activity in the 1990s and early 2000s. Somebody is going to drop a brick on their feet in the not too distant future.

See for example www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/352813/description/Global_warming_hi… …  and the alternative view is at http://notrickszone.com/2013/08/29/spiegel-scientists-hopelessly-stumped…

However, from the words of a climate scientist you need to have a look at what Judith Curry says at http://judithcurry.com/2013/08/28/pause-tied-to-equatorial-pacific-surfa… … and from the ENSO specialist who has made a name in the study of La Nina and El Nino go to http://bobtisdale.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/another-paper-blames-enso-for…

To cap it all and if you have fortified yourself with a noggin go to www.jpands.org/vol18no3/lindzen.pdf … and this is a cracker. It bites the knuckle and jogs the brain. Lindzen is an American climate scientist and physicist, a clever chap that runs rings around his CAGW opponents – who dismiss him without debating him because he just understands the atmosphere so much better than they. In fact, he is a CAGW hate figure – he has been telling them for years they are completely wrong but it falls on death ears. This piece will provide you with a clue as to why that may be. How can so many people be wrong about something – because if you want something to be right, like a desire to be saving the planet, that doesn't make what you say right. Facts have to support your position – not your emotions.
