Carver Mead is something special though as he has an impressive array of discoveries attributed to him, being a key pioneer of micro-electronics, developing tools and techniques for integrated circuit design and semi conducter advances. He went on to train generations of engineers, including the original founder of Sun Microsystems etc. Carver Mead, however, is unimpressed by so called 'pontifical experts' – which takes Cullen's fancy, because Mead also said 'more credentials and achievements don't guarantee intelligent thought.'
Mead said that weare taught there was a revolution in scientific thought that started with relativity and quantum mechanics. Actually, this is not the case, he added. A revolution is when something goes all the way around – as in to revolve. What happened is that in the early 20th century (for around 25 years), there was the beginnings of a revolution – but it got stuck a quarter of the way around. And it remains stuck, he thinks. Pontifical experts are settled scientists – the scourge of Cullen (and Mead). Carver Mead went on to say the last 70 years of the 20th century will be characterised, in future history, as he dark ages of theoretical physics. He then goes on to quote Richard Feynman.
