uplifting times

Geology

The sheer power of geological forces is displayed in the picture below, an area of land that was dredged up above sea level during an earthquake in 2010 on an island off Chile

see http://phys.org/print354187871.html … it is interesting to note that Darwin and the captain of the Beagle, Robert Fitzroy, witnessed an earthquake in 1835 in south central Chile that also caused immediate uplift of the same island. In fact, there has been a series of seismic events in the region over 200 years (and probably for long before that). A study in Nature Geoscience says the island was uplifted 3m in 1835 – but then subsided by half of that over the next 175 years and now has been hoisted up by 2m in 2010. However, the paper assumes subduction is ongoing along the coast of Chile – and this explain why it has both gone up and come down. No doubt, there are geologists out there that would disagree.

Well, it seems some people do have a different reason for the 1835 and 2010 earthquakes, pointing out that the orbit of the earth was in an arc between Neptune and Uranus on both occasions – go to https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2015/06/25/uplifted-island-the-document-…
