At https://tallbloke.wordpress.com/2017/07/21/going-up-jupiters-auroras-get… … which is posed as an unusual occurrence but presented as Jupiter revealing itself as a planet on steroids – see also http://planetpailly.com/2017/07/17/going-up-jupiters-auroras-get-weirder… … where the blog post is derived. Jupiter's aurorae get weirder than ever, we are told. The Juno mission's recent images of the Great Red Spot may be spectacular but in June Juno flew over the poles of Jupiter and detected electrically charged particles flying upwards. Normally, it is hypothesized, auroras are produced by the solar wind high in the atmosphere but here we have the phenomenon back to front – aurorae produced by electricity in the planet itself. JB comments – What? Do they think the flow of charged particles is a one way event? Go back to class and review Birkeland currents – and Kirchoff and Theverin's postulates on charge flow.  See also https://phys.org/print414946693.html .. from back in May and a connection with volcanism on the moon Io transferring energy in some way towards Jupiter.
