He missed a trick though. The new study describes them as the size of bananas. The creatures are not just crocodiles – they are terror crocodiles. Two species lived in western America, from Montana to northern Mexico. Another lived along the Atlantic coastal plain from New Jersey to Mississippi. At the time, we are told, N America was divided by the interior seaway. Strange then that Deinosuchus did not live in the seaway but either side of it. Deinosuchus grew up to 33 feet in length – which is a lot of crocodile. It preyed on dinosaurs.

Apparently, in spite of immediate scepticism, modern species such as barnacles do something similar. In this study we have crinoids – ancient sea lilies. They are flower like animals. Specimens of crinoid, have been found, fossilised attached to small pieces of drift wood. Apparently, it was shown by the researchers that that rafting was possible and the wood would not sink for between 15 to 20 years. This was enough time for crinoids to become adults before the wood sank to the bottom of the sea.
