On its way out

2 February 2023
Astronomy

Comet ZTF is barely visible to the naked eye, at its closest approach to the earth, 0.28AU away. See https://spaceweather.com … February 1st 2023. Meanwhile there is another comet about to round the sun – but will come nowhere near the earth’s orbit.

An unexpected CME hit earth’s magnetic field today, as well. It does not seem to be a major event.

If you have binoculars handy ZTF is near Ursa Major, also known as the Big Dipper. Good image of the comet by a photographer from Austria.

Meanwhile, William sent in a link on the bus sized space rock that whizzed past earth last Thursday – see https://www.yahoo.com/news/asteroids-sudden-flyby-shows-blind-110342217.html … it was discovered mere days prior to the flyby, a blind spot it would seem.
