Odd behaviour on the Sun

The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed something odd happening on the face of the Sun. A piece of its surface has broken off and is now circulating around its northern pole. It is actually a solar prominence, or filament, that has detached itself from the Sun’s surface rather than falling back on to that surface having failed to have lift off as a CME. We are still in the middle of an eleven year solar cycle and at this point in time the Sun reverses its magnetism. That may have something to do with it. Neither do we know how often such behaviour ocurrs as prior to James Webb this would have probably not been seen. It is normally at the end, or at the beginning of an eleven year solar  cycle, that such activity reaches the poles – in the north and in the south. Having gradually progressed through the interceding latitudes in its journey from the Sun’s equator. Simply dropping back down on the poles out of sequence would appear to herald something odd going on.

Even more  unusual, from the perspective of the astronomical fraternity, is another story. A mysterious red sphere has been spotted racing through space at an extraordinary rate of knots. Astronomers are struggling to understand its origin and physical nature as it challenges mainstrea theoris of cosmic formation.

It was picked up by NASAs Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer, WISE for shorthand, telescope. It was first caught as an unusually bright point of light. The velocity, or speed of movement, suggests it is propelled by an immense force. Spectroscopic analysis has provided some sparse information. It seems to be low mass – far below that of your normal kind of star. Or planet. It also has an unusual infrared signature. Quite different from your average star or cosmic body. What is it?
