The Chinese team approached the problem of when increasing the denisity of plasma most Tokamak systems experienced destabilising phenomena that disrupted plasma confinement. These disruptions damage the reactor walls and bring experiments to a close. This barrier prevents tokamaks from reaching performance levels required for ignition, the point where fusion becomes self sustaining. Instead, the Chinese team carefully controlled the initial conditions of the plasma. Specifically the fuel gas pressure and heating. By doing that they were able to suppress impurity build-up and minimise energy loss, the main contributors to to instability at high densities. They were able to by pass the barrier and enter a new zone – a density free regime. According to the Chinese this finding suggests a practical and scalable pathway for extending density limits in tokamaks and next generation burming plasma fusion devices. Not quite there yet, we may assume.
