As mentioned in the previous post there is a new paper on electro-magnetism on the moon – see https://phys.org/news/2026-09-side-moon-clues-magnetic-field.html … The far side of the moon provides some clues pointing towards a past magnetic field on our companion space body.
The moon no longer has a core generated magnetic field. The Earth has one. According to Yi Yang, a student at ETH Zurich, there is conflicting evidence on whether or not a magnetic field once existed on the moon. This goes back to the Apollo mission and the return to Earth of rocks that seem to have been magnetised at some stage or other. A new study by ETH Zurich has a conclusion that claims it did have a generated electro magnetic field. Data from NASAs ‘GRAIL’ mission was used and the modelling of magnetic fields – using orbital measurements from the Lunar Properties and Kaguya missions. Their study is published in Science Advances – see https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.aec0341 …. The study also provides some insight into the phenomenon of lunar swirls. These are bright, curved, and striped patterns on the surface of the moon. They stand out clearly from their darker background. Wherever such swirls occur there is a magnetic anomaly.
