A Thom and AS Thom. ‘Megalithic Remains in Britain and Brittany’ Clarendon Press, Oxford:1978.

Archaeology, Astronomy

This is the third book at Thom and includes the name of his son, Archie, who had helped in his survey work over many years. Thom was in his late 80s when this was published so Archie probably did a lot of the writing up. As well as the humping of surveying gear on their many excursions. It concerns Carnac, Avebury, and Stonehenge, as well as Orkney and Shetland. There is virtually no mention of stellar alignments, yet alone the constellations. The stars Capella and Deneb appear briefly in the Conclusion. They too are mentioned by John North. Even then the idea is dismissed – largely as a dating tool. Radiocarbon ruled them out.

In the Introduction we learn they had a team on these three surveys, up to as many as 12 people at a time.
