The Sun

Astronomy

At http://phys.org/print263543815.html … where there is an image of a huge solar filament across the face of the Sun (early August) that is estimated to be 800,000 km  long.

At http://phys.org/print263541466.html … it is thought solar flares will increase into 2013 as the current solar cycle reaches maximum.

At http://phys.org/print263555604.html … somewhat tongue in cheek we are told Armageddon is looming – as we approach December 2012, while at www.phenomenica.com/2012/08/extra-terrestrial-red-rain.html … we are told Kerala in India had another bout of 'red rain' – but why does it always happen in Kerala? The 2001 incident came under study and it was found microscopic particles resembling biological cells were integral to the red rain and speculation was that they had an origin in comets.

Finally, a paper in Physical Review Letters claims plasma is hundreds of times hotter than the surface of the Sun – a miscue of an earlier article (previously reported here) – see www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/08/120806171319.htm
