Space Weather in the News

14 December 2013
Astronomy

At http://spaceweather.com on December 12th, we are informed Earth entered a stream of dust and debris with an origin in the asteroid Phaethon – the source of the annual Geminids.

At http://phys.org/print306075101.html … water vapour is seen spouting out of Europa, a moon of Jupiter. Perhaps the word should be venting – as in outgassing. They are also described as plumes of water erupting from the frigid surface of Europe. Europa is thought to harbour a liquid ocean beneath what appears to be an icy crust. The question being asked is, where does the venting water come from? Is it firm beneath the surface of the Moon.

Water plumes have also been observed on Enceladus, a moon of Saturn (as long ago as 2005).
