Blue Whale Surprise

9 September 2025

At https://dailygalaxy.com/2025/09/largest-blue-whale-fossil-found-farmer/ … an Italian farmer uncovered a large blue whale fossil in a lakebed on his land. The lake was being used for irrigation and I suppose the level went down. Paleontologists say it lived 1.5 million years ago – a blue whale of that size unexpectedly very large. It’s size has led to a re-evaluation of whale evolution, we are told, as it was 85 feet in length – slightly smaller than modern blue whales. It pushes back the evolutionary timeline, but no mention of how it got there or how it was preserved as one big fossil fish.

At https://dailygalaxy.com/2025/09/scientists-new-branch-mammoth-family-tree/ … mammoths found in Mexico, not far from the capital, once lived in a wet and warm environment, unlike the modern climate of that region. The mammoths are part of a huge bone bed which contains 200 of the elephants – and date t the Ice Age. Genetic material, we are told, was surprisingly preserved. DNA normally deteriorates rapidly – especially in warm environments. One suspects they were buried very quickly but how did 200 mammoths get to be buried in one big heap?

At https://dailygalaxy.com/2025/08/for-30-years-we-got-dinosaur-sounds-all-wrong-because-of-jurassic-park-scientists-say-it-was-all-completely-wrong/ … it seems that as a result of Stephen Spielberg’s portrayal of dinosaurs in the films Jurassic Park, the public got the sound of dinosaurs all wrong. Scientists knew all the time it was not as portrayed but kept quiet. I wonder why. Some scientists may have known the sounds were probably awry but not every paleontologist. Anyway, we are now informed, many years later, dinosaurs were not so strident – and T Rex did not roar. They may have communicted with low frequency warbles, booms, or closed mouth vocalisation. More like the low pitched growl of crocodiles.
