Palaeontologists in Thailand recovered a dinosaur bone belonging to one of the long necked species. It had a Y shaped structure and was hollow, an air filled chamber. This explains how such dinosaurs were able to hold up their very long necks. The structure reduced the weight of the necks.
The mechanics behind the anatomy of long necked dinosaurs has puzzled scientists, we are told. The vertebra bone has apparently provided the explanation. It rules out the once popular idea that gravity was different during the dinosaur era. The particular species is part of the Mamenchisaurus family of dinosaurs, known almost exclusively from Chinese bone beds. This particular member of the mamenchisaurus is called Uragasaurus kalasinensis – where the uraga originates in the sanskrit word for a snake or serpent [a reference to the long necks]. Look up the Phu Kradung Formation where it was found. It promises to become a productive source of dinosaur remains.
