First we have the Cyclone engine developed by Cyclone Power Technologies in the US. This can run on virtually anything – from oil, gas, biomass, powdered coal, or even by waste heat or solar collectors. According to Wired it can also run on cold fusion (if it works).
The Koreans, it is said, are set to manufacture cold fusion units for Brillouin in 2014 (a power plant rather than an engine). As EM Smith says, a little enthusiastically, the Greens (and an assorted motley) may be on the verge of shutting down conventional fossil fuel power plants with co2 caps but long live real science and technology as cold fusion may come to the rescue (like the US cavalry of old). However, being realistic, cold fusion will have to negotiate a lot of hurdles – not least health and safety issues, and PR that downplays the benefits and overhypes the downside. EM Smith is understandably keen on cold fusion as it could provide cheap electrictiy in contrast to current alternative energy. He provides a lot of links.
