cosmic rays

Astronomy

At http://spaceweather.com (Wednesday September 30th 2015) …. there is news of sun spot activity on the face of the Sun, and prospects of a CME event.

However, a more interesting piece of information is that cosmic ray intensity striking the upper atmosphere is the same whether it is day or night. This was all part of the 'Earth to Sky Calculus' experiment which involves sending up balloons to measure what is going on in the stratosphere, conducted by students. Cosmic rays that reach Earth's atmosphere have an origin in deep space, outside the solar system.

There is a gallery of images of the recent lunar eclipse at Space Weather, taken from different locations. This one is nice.
