The theory of Henrik Svensmark, the seeding of clouds by cosmic rays, has been strengthened by the results of the CERN experiments (recently published) it is alleged. Do cosmic rays seed clouds – and alter the climate? I have the book 'The Chilling Stars' by Svensmark and Nigel Calder and part of their argument is based on electromagnetic fluctuations on the Sun's surface. Calder's web site was an interesting place to visit but he died a few years ago. The Svensmark theory was then held in limbo, somewhat, half forgotten – but it looks like it could make a comeback.
Mainstream media has been accused of spinning the research according to Lubos Motl while Tom Anderson suspects that the cosmic ray influence was toned down in order to get the paper published in Nature. You need to read between the lines he adds.

This fact has been obscured by the CAGW lobby for quite a few years now so it is nice that it is being addressed – or an attempt has been made to explain the difference between the south and north poles. They are of course affected by ocean currents in different ways. Whereas the West Antarctic peninsular does come into contact with warm water moving south from the Pacific and Indian oceans the main continental mass does not – and sea ice levels have been rising over recent years. Likewise, the North Atantic currents bring warm tropical water into the Arctic ocean as part of the ocean conveyor belt system. Warm water is actually energy and heat in the earth system and it moves to the pole in order to disperse into space, thereby keeping earth's temperature at a rough equilibrium. The energy can of course come from several sources and one of them is via electro-magnetic surges, the solar wind impacting with the magnetosphere and occassionally being strong enough to bend the magnetosphere and allow heat into the atmosphere – and reaching the surface in due course (including the oceans). In the paper just published cold water upwelling in the region of Antarctica is responsible for the cold weather and growth in sea ice. It may be that the ocean current that circles Antarctica is able to stop the warm tropical water from reaching close to the continent, and allows it to maintain a cold environment.
