Scientists asked themselves, could this mean the northern lights will move with the magnetic pole. Apparently not. A recent study made a computer model of the aurora and the Earth's magnetic poles using data going back to 1965. It delivered the answer that rather than following the magnetic poles the aurora seems to keep in step with what is known as the geomagnetic poles. The magnetic poles are where a compass needle moves downwards or upwards, vetically. The geomgnetic poles are exactly opposite each other (north and south poles) a reliable averaged out version of the magnetic poles (but contrived by scientists it would seem). They are an averaged out version of the magnetic poles which move eratically all the time.
