At https://www.livescience.com/archaeology/meskalamdugs-helmet-one-of-the-worlds-oldest-helmets-depicts-a-mesopotamian-princes-man-bun … a 15 carat gold helmet was found in a royal tomb at Ur. These tombs date back to the early third millennium BC. It was probably only worn on ceremonial occasions. However, it was painstakingly decorated to look like a wavy hair style, with an interesting take on the ears. Meskalamdug seems to mean ‘hero of the good land’ we are told. It was made from a single sheet of gold and hand beaten and modified and then engraved. The idea was to reproduce the hair of the prince that was tied back by a ribbon and pulled into a small bun at the back. It has similarities to the hairstyle in depictions of Sargon the Great – who lived at the back end of the  third millennium, hundreds of years later.
