At https://dailygalaxy.com/2026/04/asteroid-shatters-near-sun-earth-aftermath/ … a hidden, or dark, asteroid, is creating new streams of meteorites, we are informed. At the moment the asteroid is thought to be on an extreme orbit around the Sun and cannot be see when astronomers peer through the glare. It is hoped NASAs spring 2027 NEO Surveyor mission will reveal the asteroid’s whereabouts. It is assumed it is the Sun’s heat that causes comets and asteroids to crumble. Hence, the idea of an orbit that comes very close to the Sun itself. One possible problem is that it might be solar activity causing the production of debris from the unseen object. The Sun has been extraordinarily active during the current 11 year solar cycle. In other words, the dark object could be anywhere and not necessarily closely orbiting the Sun. Although that appears to be a sound guess as unseen objects have commonly come into view at the last moment as they ride out of the glare. What we do know is that a new meteor stream has been created – but its source has yet to be recognised.
